For the first time ever, the European Vocational skills week event organized at Gymnasium Vukovar

The European week of skills gained through the vocational education and training is a yearly campaign launched in 2016. It was created and its purpose still is to promote vocational education and training by organizing various activities and manifestations throughout entire Europe on local, regional and the National level. The campaign gathers providers of educational and skills training services, civil society organizations, national agencies, business associates, union and wider population with the main goal of highlighting the benefits of vocational education and training as well as presenting a wide range of possibilities in every European country.

The Gymnasium Vukovar project team which consists of four students Matija Hardi, Matko Gašparić, Ivan Kolar and Marko Macura and the two mentors Sanja Pavlovic Sijanovic and Davor Sijanovic exhibited their two STEM projects to the entire school and the visitors taking it into consideration that it was open to the public. Both projects were the winning projects on several exhibitions and competitions throughout the 2019 school year. The first project is the model of a smart city and how we see it. We named it: “Smart city of Vukovar – our view of smart living” and the other we named: “Earthquake detector in real time” – an IoT project able to detect Earthquakes.

The project “Smart city of Vukovar - Our view of smart living” represents the real projection (look) of one part of the main road in Vukovar leading toward another city in our region as well as the beautiful sidewalk along the bank of the river of Danube. The model is powered by Arduino boards and sensors and some of the toys and parts we picked from our homes. This magnificent model offers a solution in a greater electricity saving, better use of a solar Sun power panels, and reducing the traffic jams on the road as well as around the parking lots. In that manner, we successfully created: SMART CITY LIGHTS, SMART PARKING, SOLAR SUN TRACKER, SMART TRAFFIC LIGHTS.

The second project, Earthquake detector – seismograph and its ability to track and send all the data in real time from the accelerometer to the microcontroller Genuine Arduino MKR 1000 Wi-Fi was presented by Matija Hardi. Matija also described the infrastructure of this project explaining how the seismograph is placed in a specially made box visible from all angles through the 4 mm thick Plexiglas. The intelligent access control is the key of the entire presentation unit. The access to the seismograph is possible only through a double Plexiglas door using the RFID card reader technology which is programmed in the way that one master key gives or denies access to the other cards or keys. As a solution for tracking and recording the vibrations around the school using the IoT technology, we created: Smart Seismograph, RFID access control, two axis Solar power bank, LED RGB lightening.

At the end, Matija demonstrated what will happen If the seismograph detects the vibration more powerful from the one that is set, several actions will occur simultaneously. Immediately as the vibrations are detected, the microcontroller activates the LED RGB lightning by blinking warning red lights accompanied by acoustic buzzer sound. Shortly after the alarm was triggered, all the devices connected to the Blynk server(http://blynk2.croatianmakers.hr), will receive a message about the possible Earthquake.

By conducting this interactive exhibition, our goal was to was to offer a support to this global campaign for vocational education and training and to empower the students to get in touch with such projects by working with Arduino and IoT and to demonstrate how they can gain new knowledge through the realization of innovative STEM projects which will in the end help them in preparation for challenges of the future by developing new innovative and creative solutions.

In the end, organizing this event during the European Vocational skills week, we wanted to show that a good quality vocational and gymnasium education have the same goal, and that is to develop creative and innovative potential of every student since only the continuous and permanent education throughout the life of every individual represents the key for enhancing the chances of employment, better integration into the society and active population in every country no matter where you live.
